January 10, 2010. Peterson Group proposed to convert 96 residential rental units to a hotel. It has been operating 12 floors as a hotel for several years. The Development Permit Board denied the request. In spite of this decision, the owners are continuing to operate as a hotel.
While the Peterson Group has applied to take 96 rental units OFF the market, it has also been seeking (with Westbank Corp.) millions of dollars in incentives from the City to build 193 rental units under the STIR program at 1401 Comox.
These are the details of their proposal that was denied:
- Change the use of a total of 96 units in the existing building fro residential to hotel use (8 units on each of the following 12 floors: 7, 11, 12, 14, 16, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31)
- Convert two existing residential units on level 3 from residential to ancillary hotel use (hotel office use);
- Maintain the balance of the remaining units (145 units) as residential use
- Minor interior alterations to the interior ground floor and underground parking areas
