WEN News: Town Hall Meeting June 4 (Mon), 1401 Comox public hearing June 11 (Mon)

Major rezonings continue even while the community plan process begins.

Thanks to a good response to our appeal last week, we invite you to the West End Town Hall Meeting 2012 on Monday June 4 to discuss timely and critical issues. Please come and spread the word.

If you take one action for your community this week, we urge you to sign up to speak to Council on Monday June 11 about the 1401 Comox tower rezoning by calling 311 or e-mailing publichearing@vancouver.ca (ask for your speaker number), or write your opinion (opposition/support) tomayorandcouncil@vancouver.ca

7 to 9 pm (6:30 doors, arrivals)

Program highlights:

  • Summary of events of the past two years and community concerns
  • Updates on critical projects including 1401 Comox, Beach Towers, Harwood (tulip tree site), Darling House, etc.
  • Resolutions on critical projects and issues, including housing
  • The Community Plan process: What to expect (by John Weldon, resident and vice-chair, Vancouver City Planning Commission)

This meeting is being offered (1) to build community by providing information and creating the space for an open discussion on critical issues of community planning – including livability, affordability, character, and sustainability of our neighbourhood, and (2) to give people what they need to articulate their own thoughts to Mayor and Council, including at the June 11 public hearing for the rezoning of 1401 Comox.

We thank the generous donors who made this meeting possible, and welcome further donations to further defray costs. To make a secure online donation by credit card, please  use the DONATE button in the top right corner. Alternatively, please mail a cheque to:

Public Hearing for Rezoning & Development Permit at 1401 Comox Street

Date: Monday, June 11, 2012
Time: Commencing 6 pm
Place: Council Chamber, Third Floor, City Hall, 453 West 12th Avenue

This rezoning is for a 22-storey tower of market-priced rental (7.19 FSR) at 1401 Comox Street (site of St. John’s Church). We urge you to review information from WEN on this application, plus the official City information, then prepare your thoughts, and either

  1. Sign up to speak to Council on Monday June 11 by calling 311 or e-mailing publichearing@vancouver.ca (ask for your speaker number), or
  2. Write your opinion to mayorandcouncil@vancouver.ca

Millions of words have been spoken and written about this application by Westbank Projects Corp., Peterson Investment Group and Henriquez Partners Architects since it first appeared in 2009. Our website coverage of this project has been updated  here. This rezoning is an important test case for the West End and the entire city.

Bottom line: This proposal is virtually unchanged since the original submission in 2009.  There is no compelling justification for the large proposed density increase above the current zoning and many people believe the current proposed project will damage the character and livability of the West End.

Building Representatives Wanted

Building reps are wanted in the West End who are willing to help raise awareness and distribute information affecting the community, plus “pledge to speak” cards for Public Hearings. For the upcoming 1401 Comox hearing on June 11, we have “pledge cards” to leave in common areas or to distribute. Download from our website or contact us by writing info@westendneighbours.ca to get involved.

Volunteers Needed Now

If you feel passionate about your community, or even if you just like it — and if you have some skills and time you’d like to offer — please send us a message to info@westendneighbours.ca
