Beach Towers – major infill project in West End – goes to public hearing Feb 5

We have received word that the next major rezoning application to go to a public hearing will be the proposed Beach Towers development on Harwood and Beach Avenues. The hearing will be at Vancouver City Hall, Tuesday, February 5, 2013, starting at 6 pm.

The applicants are IBI/HB Architects, on behalf of Beach Towers Investments Inc., which we believe is owned by Devonshire Properties. West End Neighbours has covered this project on various web pages on this site, and will provide additional information and commentary on the project in the coming days. Stay tuned.

The City and applicant have decided to go ahead with this project before the West End community plan process is completed. The application was enabled (and is being grandfathered) under the STIR program, adopted in 2009 and ended in 2012, which gives incentives to developers and dramatic relaxation of zoning guidelines in fast-track rezoning/development applications — in return for constructing expensive rental units.

So that the community knows the hearing date, we urge locals to contact the City and applicant and ensure that the date of the public hearing immediately gets added to the big yellow rezoning signs. Project proponents in other rezonings are known to have failed to do so at all.
